The elm-lined trackway on Mash Barn Lane
where these photographs were taken was cleared to make way for
an access road to a football training centre. These images are
all that remains of what was a distinctive and atmospheric lane.
Elm has been one of the great casualties of the English
landscape since Dutch Elm Disease swept through in the 1970s,
and the loss of surviving mature trees to development makes
records like this all the more significant. © Ray Hamblett, Lancing, 2005 - 2026

Elm leaf - showing galls
Scanned leaf from a different tree
to the one above. The galls are likely caused by the elm
gall aphid (Tetraneura ulmi), which produces
characteristic pouch-like swellings on the upper surface
of elm leaves in spring.
